Cambridge United dominated and hit the woodwork twice but were unable to find the breakthrough against Southport.
Adam Marriott had the best chance of the first half but his shot was saved by Southport keeper Tony McMillan.
The hosts went closer after the break with a vicious 25-yard Conal Platt strike thundering against the bar and Sam Ives also rattling the woodwork.
The visitors' best effort was an Alan Moogen volley which was well saved by U's keeper Simon Brown.
