Daryl Clare scored twice for Gateshead as they saw off Cambridge to move two points clear of the relegation zone.

The hosts took the lead when Andy Ferrell played in Clare who struck from the edge of the area.

Cambridge went close to an equaliser through Aiden Palmer and Antonio Murray but were thwarted by Paul Farman in the Gateshead goal.

But the home side sealed the win late on when Clare notched from the penalty spot after Rory McAuley handled.
