Neil Barrett joined York from Ebbsfleet last summer
York City strengthened their play-off chances by seeing off Kidderminster Harriers to record back-to-back wins for the first time since December.
The Minstermen almost took the lead after three minutes but Paul Harsley's 35-yard drive flew just wide.
Tom Sharpe spurned the visitors' best chance, heading wide from close range before the break.
But York secured the win on 67 minutes, when Neil Barrett shot home from close range after a fine Jamie Clarke cross.
The hosts went close to an equaliser six minutes from time, but Marc Goodfellow's drive was tipped round the post by City keeper Michael Ingham.
Harriers manager Steve Burr told BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester;
"It was a frustrating night, I look at York and think if this is the top of the Conference there is not a lot of difference in it. The chance that came their way they finished it, and we could have done better with chances that came our way.
"But I don't want them (the players) to rest on the good start we have made, I want them top push on. I want to beat these teams and hopefully we can get the players in to do that.
"These lads that are here at the minute it's down to them to show they are good enough and we have fallen a bit short in the last couple of weeks."
York manager Martin Foyle told BBC Radio York:
"It's a fantastic three points for the club. Neil Barrett has that ability in his game, to make forward runs at the right time, and it was a great finish. He deserves that because he's been working hard in recent weeks without getting the goals.
"[Goalkeeper] Michael Ingham has been fantastic for me, he thoroughly deserves the plaudits. The captaincy has settled him down a bit and his concentration levels are there for everybody to see."
