Tonbridge Angels manager Tommy Warrilow saluted his defence after Saturday's 1-0 win against Kingstonian eased their relegation fears.
Second-placed Kingstonian were beaten by Paul Booth's first half goal.
The win leaves Tonbridge 15th in the Ryman League. And Warrilow told BBC Radio Kent: "It was nail-biting but I felt we shaded it.
"We defended a lot better than we have done in previous weeks and that was the key to us winning."
Warrilow, who has been forced to release key players owing to financial constraints, did not conceal his relief.
"We were up against an excellent side who are second in the table," he said, "so the win will boost confidence.
"Although the pitch looked good it was difficult, but we coped superbly."
