Craig Baxter's stunning 35-yard strike was enough to beat Altrincham and lift Gateshead three points clear of the Blue Square Premier relegation zone.
The Tynesiders had enjoyed marginally the better of the first half, with Brian Wake wasting the best chance when he headed over from close range.
Greg Young hit the post from 20 yards for the visitors as they sought the win to re-ignite their play-off hopes.
But they left empty handed after Baxter found the top corner from long range.
