Summer signing Lee Smith marked his debut with the winning goal as Histon edged out lowly Grays Athletic.
Smith's six-yard strike from Gareth Gwillim's cross was enough to settle the match and make the hosts pay for wasting several decent opportunities.
Petar Rnkovic forced two good saves from visiting keeper Danny Naisbitt and also headed an early chance wide.
Histon pressed for a second after the break through Sam Long's 18-yard strike and Jamie Barker's header.
