Stevenage kept up the pressure on leaders Oxford as troubled Chester suffered their fourth defeat in a row in the Blue Square Premier.
Yemi Odubade opened the scoring just before the break, firing past keeper John Danby into the corner of the net.
And Mark Roberts made sure of the points by firing home Andy Drury's corner from the edge of the area.
Chester had gone close to taking a first-half lead but James Owen's free-kick cannoned against the crossbar.
Stevenage manager Graham Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"They sat very deep defensively and tried to make it difficult for us but I thought over 90 minutes we did enough to win the game.
"To get a second goal and see the game out comfortably, which I think we did in the end, was a positive for me."
