Kidderminster 1-0 Crawley Town

Gavin Caines
Summer signing Gavin Caines hit only his second goal for the Harriers

Gavin Caines' last-gasp strike clinched victory for Kidderminster Harriers over mid-table Crawley.

A third win in four matches for Mark Yates's men has seen them rise to within four points of the Blue Square Premier play-off pack.

After Matty Barnes-Homer went close, Caines snatched victory in the 89th minute when he latched onto David McDermott's neat pass.

And that stretched Crawley's bad run to just one point from a possible 12.

Crawley came close to opening the scoring when Barry Cogan's speculative long-range effort forced a good stop from home keeper Dean Coleman.

Barnes-Homer and Duane Courtney were then foiled by Simon Rayner at the other end, as chances came thick and fast at either end.

Three minutes before the break, Kidderminster's Dean Bennett tried his luck from distance and his drive was superbly parried by Rayner.

The hosts continued to press for the opener, with Barnes-Homer's drive drifting wide on the hour mark and Aaron Farrell then blazed off target midway through the half.

Caines looked to have wasted a good chance when he volleyed Darryl Knights' corner over the bar, but he atoned in the dying seconds.

Harriers manager Mark Yates told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"We had a few players out and people were questioning whether we had strength in depth.

"But you can see the type of football they are playing and I am as pleased as punch for them today.

"They showed we are a good passing team and we have got players here who can both play good football and win matches."

Crawley assistant boss Paul Raynor told BBC Sussex:

"I am bitterly disappointed. The guys have given us absolutely everything today.

"We worked extremely hard, played some good stuff and to lose a goal in the final minute of normal time in the manner that it was is a bitter pill to swallow.

"We did feel as though we deserved something."
