Wrexham fought out a goalless draw with bottom club Chester in their cross-border derby at the Racecourse Ground.
Chester had the ball in the back of the hosts' net after just a minute, but Nick Chadwick was adjudged to have fouled keeper Chris Maxwell.
City striker Gregg Blundell's header then forced Maxwell into a fine save.
Mansour Assoumani could have stolen the three points for Wrexham at the end of a scrappy contest but the French defender could only fire over.
Chester, who have now drawn their last five league games, remain 22 points adrift of safety.
And they had four players booked, including on-loan Rochdale midfielder Clark Keltie on his debut.
But, as far as local pride is concerned, they have now drawn four of their last five league visits to the Racecourse.
Wrexham manager Dean Saunders said:
"I thought the players gave me everything they've got.
"It was a typical derby game where both teams don't want to lose.
"I thought we were the better team but probably didn't do enough. We needed a good finish from someone."
