Petar Rnkovic scored on his debut as struggling Grays held in-form Stevenage to a draw at Broadhall Way.
Rnkovic, who was only given international clearance hours before the kick-off, gave Grays an early lead with a close-range shot.
Lee Boylan equalised for Stevenage before the break with a cool finish.
But Grays, who had conceded 10 goals in their last three games, managed to hold on in the second half to end Stevenage's six-game winning streak.
Grays Athletic manager Julian Dicks told BBC Essex:
"Today, they came out and showed me they can play with passion and pride and 110% commitment that is all I ask of them and tonight they showed that.
"I thought we were the better side football wise, they had their chances, in the end it was a bit like the Alamo but that's what football is all about.
"That is their benchmark for every game they play."
