Newly-promoted Tamworth registered their first away win in the Blue Square Premier as they claimed all three points from an ill-tempered game.
Tom Shaw was involved in both Tamworth goals, Richard Tait's opener before the break and Chris Smith's close-range second just before the hour.
Nick Chadwick pulled one back for the bottom club 13 minutes from time.
But, in a game of nine bookings at the Deva, six of them came in the final 20 minutes as tempers boiled over.
It needed a fine save from Lambs keeper Danny Alcock to prevent Chadwick from producing an immediate equaliser straight after Tait's opener.
And on-loan Burnley midfielder Adam Kay and defender Michael Lea fired late chances over the bar as Chester finished strongly.
