York City played with 10 men for the final half hour at the International Stadium as they came from behind to earn a first away win of the season.
Alex Francis's low shot fired Gateshead ahead in first-half injury time.
Richard Brodie then levelled from 12 yards. And, barely 60 seconds later, York were down to 10 men when striker Richard Pacquette was sent off.
But Michael Gash won the three points when he headed home Andy Ferrell's cross just 10 minutes from time.
York's first away win of the season sends them soaring up to ninth in the Blue Square Premier.
But it came at a cost, defender David McGurk going off after just 16 minutes, while Gateshead's Carl Jones also had to be substituted before the half hour.
