Goals from Mark Rankine and Adam Smith saw York see off Forest Green to secure their first win of the season.
Keeper Terry Burton kept the hosts at bay for most of the game with some fine saves as the visitors looked set to earn their first point this season.
But the breakthrough finally came with just 15 minutes remaining when Rankine converted from the spot after Ross Stearn had fouled him in the box.
Smith then put the result beyond doubt with an emphatic right-foot finish.
