Redditch Utd 2-1 Harrogate Town

Blue Square North

Redditch United could yet finish in the top half of the Blue Square North table after a 2-1 home win over Harrogate Town on Tuesday.

Redditch boss Gary Whild told BBC Hereford & Worcester his side had got better as the game had gone on.

"We were a bit slow starting and to be fair to Harrogate they were up for it from the off," he said.

"But in the second half we got the bit between our teeth and we finished it with a cracking goal," Whild added.

Despite that poor start, it was Redditch who took the lead on 23 minutes when Jack Byrne finished from close range with the Harrogate defence appealing for offside.

The goal spurred on the visitors who levelled eight minutes later when Dan Broadbent took advantage of some sloppy Reds' marking.

Ryan Beswick won the game for Redditch on 65 minutes when he turned his defender inside the area before rifling the ball home.

Redditch had secured their Blue Square North status for another season by beating Hyde United in their previous outing and Gary Whild admitted that it had been difficult to get the players up for this match.

"You always get that mindset, but we just tried to remind the players that good players do the same thing week in, week out whatever the situation," he said.

"It is difficult as some of them are young, but you try and get that across to them.

"In the second half they thoroughly deserved the win," he added.

Redditch's recent run has transformed their season as little more than a month ago they were looking likely relegation candidates.

Gary Whild is building for the future and is confident he has the nucleus of a squad that can be competitive in Blue Square North next season.

"Other than the two lads who are here [on loan] from Leicester, there is no reason why we shouldn't look to keep them," he said.

"They are obviously happy at the club and are part of a successful team.

"As a player, that's what you want to be involved in so we shall be doing our best to keep hold of them as there are some talented lads here."

Redditch will round off their Blue Square North programme with an away trip to Alfreton Town on Saturday 25 April.

There will be coverage of this match on BBC Hereford and Worcester's Sport on Saturday from 1400 BST.
