York ended their nine-game wait for a Blue Square Premier victory and climbed out of the relegation places thanks to Daniel McBreen's first-half goal.
City took advantage of lazy defending to score the only goal, with Daniel Purkiss feeding McBreen, who stole in and coolly slotted home.
David McGurk almost sealed the win but hit the post with his shot.
