A moment of magic from Wayne Carlisle saw Torquay strengthen their grip on a Blue Square Premier play-off place with a hard-earned win at Altrincham.
The substitute brought the game to life by netting a right-foot shot from outside the area in the last minute.
Torquay's Scott Bevan denied a Dale Johnson effort in the opening half and parried Joe O'Neill's attempt late on.
At the other end Stuart Coburn thwarted Matthew Green but the play-off chasing Gulls were not to be denied.
