Trinity edge closer to play-offs

Luke Beckett & Lewis McMahon
Beckett (l) and McMahon have scored 20 goals between them this season

Gainsborough Trinity moved to within two points of the Blue Square North play-off places with a 2-1 victory at promotion rivals Stalybridge Celtic.

Luke Beckett's chip gave Trinity a sixth-minute lead at Bower Fold.

Andrew Smart equalised for Stalybridge before Lewis McMahon scrambled home the winner after 34 minutes.

McMahon told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "It's a massive win for us. You'd come here sometimes and settle for a point, so to get all three is brilliant."

We've got 12 games left now and we need to win the majority of them to stand any chance

Steve Charles
Manager Steve Charles admitted that although Gainsborough were still in the hunt for the play-offs, they were at a disadvantage, with all the teams around them in the table having games in hand.

"You never say never but we have thrown away a lot of points this season and that will come back to bite us," he said.

"We've got 12 games left now and we need to win the majority of them to stand any chance but we'll certainly be going for it."
