Smith had a loan spell at Lincoln City last season
Thomas Rooney's 89th-minute equaliser denied Gainsborough Trinity victory as they drew 1-1 with Vauxhall Motors at the Northolme in Blue Square North.
Debutant Adam Smith's goal in the 59th minute looked to have given Trinity their first home win of the season.
But an error from Nicky Ellis allowed Rooney to slot home for the Motormen.
Trinity boss Steve Charles told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "I'm gutted. We had chances to kill the game off but didn't and one lapse has cost us dearly."
The draw was Trinity's third in a row, and Charles admitted: "We should have buried them today.
"They were a poor side and we should have had four or five goals. We have to be more clinical in and around the box."
Trinity went into the match without much-travelled striker Trevor Benjamin who was released by the club after just a handful of appearances.
Charles added: "I was a little disappointed in him. I felt he needed to do more for us.
"When we signed him I thought he might provide a different kind of striker with strength and power, something we don't have at the moment, but he didn't quite do that for us."
