Greg Pearson marked his competitive debut by notching the goal that gave Burton a win at Salisbury.
Pearson finished from close range after just two minutes after Matt Bailey had flicked on John McGrath's corner.
Last season's play-off semi-finalists threatened to extend their lead but Jody Banim fired over after being set up by McGrath.
Keeper Kevin Poole preserved Burton's win, saving twice as Matt Tubbs tried his luck from outside the box.
