Worcester City have completed the signing of Tamworth midfielder David Bampton in a deal that sees former captain Chris Smith move to the Lamb.

Chairman Dave Boddy told BBC Hereford & Worcester that City are delighted to have signed the 23-year-old.

"He has been top of Richard Dryden's shopping list as he's been chasing him since he joined the club," he said.

"He's a combative midfield player and that's what Richard has been looking for," he added.

Boddy said that while they were disappointed to lose a player of Chris Smith's obvious quality, the deal is probably in the best interests of all parties.

"It is sad to see Chris go as we would liked to have kept him, but it has been an open secret that he doesn't want to play in the southern section.

"This is for travelling reasons as his base is in Derby - we have to respect that and Chris moves on with our best wishes," said Boddy.

The City chairman has also confirmed that another member of last season's squad has found himself a new club, while there is every likelihood of a second confirming his move to pastures new within the next couple of days.

"Ryan Clarke has definitely joined Boston United and I believe that George Clegg is going to join Hinckley United.

"It's a difficult situation as we wouldn't have wanted to lose either player.

"Cleggie [George Clegg] has been with us for three-and-a-half seasons and is a quality player but, based in Manchester, realistically he has got absolutely no chance of playing in the southern section."
