Fleetwood given stadium go-ahead
Non-League
Fleetwood Town have been given the go-ahead by council officials to start work on phase one of their 3m project to revamp Highbury Stadium.

The plans will see the ground's North and West stands replaced.

Fleetwood chief executive Steve Curwood told BBC Radio Lancashire that the new stands should be ready for next term.

"The time frame is to build everything we need during the close season," he said. "And it should be all ready for the new season."

The existing North stand will be demolished and replaced by a 2,000 capacity terrace, including a supporters' bar and kitchen, while the new West stand will have 500 seats.

The current ground capacity at the Highbury Stadium is 3,497, which will increase to 5,000 following the completion of phase one.

The Unibond Premier Division club can also look forward to the installation of new floodlights.

The club's planning application to Wyre Borough Council was unanimously approved on Wednesday by members of the planning committee.

Construction will begin in early May and will be completed in good time for the start of the 2008/09 season.
