Wembley dream alive for Kirkham
Kirkham & Wesham manager Mick Fuller
Fuller says he will make changes for the replay
Kirkham & Wesham's Wembley dream is still alive after Saturday's FA Vase quarter-final tie against Coventry Sphinx ended 3-3 after extra time.

The two sides will meet again on Saturday for a replay at Sphinx Drive.

A record crowd of 1093 at Kellamergh Park watched a game that was a great advert for non-league football.

"I've spoken to the players and they're confident we can go down there for the replay and still win it," said Kirkham president David Haythornthwaite.

"For us to come this far in the competition is a great achievement but we want to go further.

"We had a record crowd here and they saw a fantastic game of football that was a great advert for the league and our club, so all round it's been a good day."

After absorbing some early Coventry pressure, Kirkham & Wesham went ahead in the 15th minute from their first clear cut chance but the visitors pulled a goal back three minutes before the break.

Six minutes into the second half, Kirkham went ahead once more, this time from the penalty spot.

Ged Smith was tripped by Coventry defender Carl Winterbottom inside the box, and Sean Paterson sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot kick.

Coventry drew level with nine minutes of normal time remaining, taking the game into extra time.

A great run by Matt Walwyn took him past a defender before he unleashed a cracking shot that beat the keeper and hit the outside of the post.

Straight from the restart, Coventry went ahead for the first time in the game after a Jerome Murdock shot was deflected by Tom Maguire passed Kirkham keeper Summerfield.

Six minutes into the second period of extra time, Kirkham drew level after Sphinx keeper Ashley Hooker spilt the ball at the feet of Kirkham striker Mark Wane, who chipped the ball into the net from close range.

"There will be some changes made to the side for next week, and we've got some players who are ready to come back into the side who didn't play today," said Kirkham manager Mick Fuller.

"It will obviously be a difficult game but I'm looking forward to it. I was pleased with the way we responded, the lads gave everything they had and in the end I think 3-3 is a good result.

If Kirkham and Wesham beat Coventry Sphinx in the replay, they will be at home in the first leg of the semi-final to Suffolk based Needham Market on Saturday 22 March.
