Chorley to stage fundraising appeal for teenager Jessica Knight |
Preston legend Sir Tom Finney will be guest of honour at Chorley's Victory Park at a fundraising appeal for teenage stab victim Jessica Knight. The event starts in Chorley town centre prior to a collection being made ahead of Saturday's game with Woodley Sports.
"I was very sad when I read about what happened to Jessica," said Sir Tom.
The aim is to send 14-year-old Jessica, repeatedly attacked in Chorley's Astley Park last month, on a dream holiday to Florida.
The Parklands High School pupil is still being treated at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Pendlebury after being the victim of a knife attack.
And Chorley chairman Ken Wright said Sir Tom's presence will add some much needed publicity to the event.
"I think the last time Sir Tom came to Chorley was in 1986 when he attended a function at the Town Hall after our FA Cup run when we played the likes of PNE and Wolves," said Wright.
"Hopefully it might encourage one or two to come to the ground because he commands so much respect in the area because of his time as a footballer and all the charity work that he does."

Jessica's grandfather Alan Walmsley said: "For Sir Tom Finney to get involved is wonderful.
"I've been absolutely dumbstruck by the response. I can't believe there are so many people who care.
"Every day I find myself in tears because I'm overwhelmed.
"It's giving the family a lot of strength."
Sir Tom, who played 433 games for Preston North End and 76 times for England, said: "My grandchildren are slightly older than Jessica but something like this affects everyone."
