Onome Sodje and Stuart Elliott scored the goals which ended York's winless run in a match with three red cards. York's Mark Robinson failed to convert from the spot in the 20th minute after Jamie Stuart fouled Chris Beardsley and was dismissed for the challenge.
Sodje converted Martyn Woolford's cross to put York ahead before Ross Flitney was sent off for fouling Mark Marshall.
Elliott's deflected shot doubled the lead in the 65th minute before Richard Brodie saw red for violent conduct.
