Hereford sealed a 1-1 draw at Morecambe to leave their Nationwide Conference play-off semi-final delicately poised. Jim Bentley headed home from Michael Twiss's corner in the 22nd minute to put Sammy McIlroy's side ahead.
But Hereford equalised on 54 minutes when Robert Purdie converted a penalty following a handball offence by Shrimps midfielder Fraser McLachlan.
The sides meet again on Thursday to decide who will face either Halifax or Grays in the Conference play-off final.
