| Celtic handed favourable draw ![]() Celtic are keen on more Champions League action Celtic will face either MSK Zilina or FC Basel in the Champions League third qualifying round. The Scottish champions, who were seeded, have been drawn at home for the first leg against either the champions of Slovakia or the Swiss double winners. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill admitted he would have preferred to have played the first leg away from home, and insisted he anticipated a tough tie whoever the opposition. "Whoever we get at this stage of the competition will be difficult opponents," the manager told Celtic's official website. "We are still trying to find our feet in the Champions League but we will go out and give it absolutely everything to make it into the group stages again. "After our performance against Ajax in Amsterdam last year at this stage of the competition, I don't think we should fear anyone." Striker John Hartson admitted he knew very litle about either team, but agreed that they might turn to Lubo Moravcik for some information on the Slovaks. "Basel won the Swiss league last season so they must be a good side but, apart from that, none of the lads know an awful lot about the two teams," Hartson said. "Obviously, if we can avoid the bigger teams, we have have been lucky, but it still won't be a stroll in the park for us." Both MSK Zilina and FC Basel went straight into the second qualifying round of the competition and they meet in the first leg on 31 July, with the second leg a week later.
The Scots have triumphed on all three occasions, beating their opponents 10-1 on aggregate in the first round of the 1963-64 Cup Winners' Cup. They met again in the first round of the Champions' Cup in 1969-70, Celtic winning 2-0 on aggregate. Their last meeting came in the quarter final of the 1973-74 Champions' Cup when Celtic came out 6-5 on aggregate. Two-point lead FC Basel are now managed by former Tottenham Hotspur boss Christian Gross. Gross led them to their first national championship in 22 years last season. They currently lie four points behind league leaders Grasshoppers after four games of the new season. Zilina's season is under way as well and they have already established a two-point lead in the Slovakian Superleague. They became only the fourth team to win the league last season since the country split from the Czech Republic in 1993. The first leg of the third round ties will be played on 13 or 14 August, with the return games on 27 or 28 August. |
