| Libya tame Congo ![]() DR Congo did not go down without a fight Libya had a great start to their Nations Cup campaign with a 3-2 home win over DR Congo on Sunday. Ali Al Mallian opened scoring in the 15th minute, with Gehad Montaser adding the second in the 37th. The Libyans sealed victory with a third goal when team captain Essam Ragab converted a penalty in the 41st minute. The Congolese seized the initiative in the second half and got a just reward for their efforts when Lukina's 30 metre strike sailed past Libyan goalkeeper Samier Aboud. Buckling under Congolese pressure, Libya conceded a second goal and retreated into defence to hold onto their slim lead. Playmaker Tarek Al Taaeb and striker El Mossaly were the outstanding players for the North Africans, missing several scoring chances. DR Congo striker Lomana Lua-Lua was surprisingly used as a midfielder but caused few problems in his new role. Francesco Scoglio, Libya's Italian coach, said the win puts them on the road to Tunisia 2004. "Winning the first game is very important and I am happy that we have the three points," he said. |
