In the event South Africa did not withdraw its bid for the tournament, which is being used to select Africa's representatives at the World Cup for the first time. This controversial move is designed to cut down on fixture congestion by removing the need for continent-wide World Cup qualifiers. But it gives the host nation a huge advantage, hence the unprecedented interest in holding the tournament. Caf's deadline of 31 March has been met by six countries. Senegal's Minister of Sport said they would be entering a bid, but that appears not to have materialised. Of the countries in the running, only Gabon has not hosted the Nations Cup before.
