South Africa defeat Africa Cup of Nations holders Egypt
Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela scored the only goal of the game
South Africa striker Katlego Mphela struck with the last kick of the match to secure a 1-0 win over Egypt in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The defeat leaves the title holders on the verge of elimination from the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
On Sunday, Niger kept up the pressure with a 3-1 win over Sierra Leone which keeps them in second place.
Mphela's goal was an angled effort past veteran goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari three minutes into added time.
South Africa's second straight win in Group G leaves Egypt floundering at the bottom of the table.
South Africa have seven points from three games at the halfway stage of the campaign.
Bafana Bafana have opened a six-point gap over the Egyptians, who have won the last three Nations Cups but now find themselves in deep trouble in their bid to qualify for the 2012 finals.
The teams meet again in Cairo in the next round of qualifiers in the four-team group in June.
In their game in Niamey on Sunday, Niger came from behind to win comfortably over Sierra Leone.
The Leone Stars took the lead through Mohamed Bangoura but the home team proved strongest and will be eyeing the visit of the group leaders in September's penultimate qualifying round.
