The BBC understands that Libya will no longer host the African Under-20 tournament scheduled to begin on 18 March this year.
The wave of social and political unrest sweeping across the country has forced the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to move the tournament.
On Friday Caf president Issa Hayayou suggested that the body will meet within one week to take a decision while hoping peace returns to Libya.
But BBC sources suggest that South Africa or Ghana are being touted as possible replacements.
"It is very important that the competition is organised in good conditions," Hayatou said.
Libya has been embroiled in civil strife for over a week with protesters asking for the country's leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to step down.
