Sudan is hosting a major tournament for the first time since 1970

Algeria got off to a flying start in this year's African Nations Championships (CHAN) by defeating Uganda 2-0 on Saturday.

Abdelmounem Djabou put the Desert Foxes in the lead in the 17th minute of the Group A match in Khartoum.

Algeria doubled their lead on the hour mark thanks to a strike by Hilal Soudani.

The victory puts them on the top of the table after hosts Sudan beat Gabon 1-0 in the group's opening game on Friday.

Mudather Eltaib scored the only goal of the game halfway through the first half.

2009 runners-up Ghana also start their Group B campaign on Saturday as they face South Africa, while Niger play Zimbabwe.

This is the first Caf tournament hosted by Sudan since 1970 when they maximised home advantage to lift the African Nations Cup.
