The tournament doubles as Africa's qualifiers for the U17 World Cup

Congo produced the shock of the African U17 Championship so far with a 3-0 win over holders The Gambia on Sunday.

Striker Samarange Binguila scored twice to clinch the historic win for the Congolese in Group B of the tournament in Rwanda.

Binguila put his side in the lead with a strike from the edge of the box after outwitting two defenders.

Stevy Epako scored directly from a free-kick at the edge of penalty area to double Congo's lead.

Binguila sealed the comprehensive victory with a pile-driver to leave the title holders with a mountain to climb in their subsequent group matches.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast rallied from a goal down to beat Mali 2-1 in the group's other game on Saturday.

Tiecoro Keita put Mali in the lead in the 24th minute but second half goals from Drissa Diarrassouba and Stephen Guy Bedi sealed the win for the Ivorians.

The Gambia must beat Mali in their next game on Wednesday to brighten their chances of reaching the next round.

Victory for Congo in their clash with Ivory Coast also on Wednesday will all but seal their place in the knock-out stages.

The tournament continues on Tuesday with two Group A matches as Egypt take on Rwanda while Burkina Faso play Senegal.
