Zambian FA crisis deepens further

Kalusha Bwalya
Bwalya has received backing from Fifa

A rival faction within the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) elected a new Executive Committee on Friday, deepening the crisis in the game there.

The group say that the committee run by FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya is no longer in charge.

They say the previous committee dissolved itself when four members resigned in September.

Bwalya, who is backed by Fifa, refutes that and has called an emergency meeting for Saturday.

The former Zambian captain co-opted a number of members on to his committee after the others departed, in order to maintain a quorum.

The meeting on Saturday is to ratify that move and a Fifa representative will be in attendance.

But three of the four people co-opted by Bwalya have turned down the offer.

The rival group includes senior officials in the game in Zambia such as the head of the country's referees association and a large number of clubs.

The new committee says its members have been elected in an interim capacity and that fresh elections should be held in 90 days.
