Esperance fans are accused of ripping up seats and lighting flares

Tunisian club Esperance faces a fine from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) due to violence by its fans.

Esperance fans ripped out stadium seats and lit fireworks during the first leg of its African Champions League semi-final against Egypt's Al Ahly.

Eleven policemen were injured and at least 14 Tunisians fans arrested during the 3 October game in Cairo, which Al Ahly won 2-1.

Stadium authorities claim the fans caused US $52,000 worth of damage.

Caf football development director Abdel-Moneim Hussein said on Wednesday that the body will impose financial penalties on Esperance.

Referee Adel El-Raay from Libya who was in charge of the game said in his match report that Esperance fans attacked police officers who were trying to stop them from lighting fireworks.

The return leg takes place this Sunday, 17 October in the Tunisian city of Rades.
