SPAIN
Frederic Kanoute begins the 2010 football season with a brace for Sevilla
Mali striker Frederic Kanoute was the star of the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
Sevilla went down 1-0 halfway through to the first half to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic strike.
The 32-year-old Kanoute came on as a substitute with 20 minutes to go to score twice for Sevilla to give them a 3-1 home victory over Barcelona.
ENGLAND
Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba was back with a bang on the opening day of the English Premier League season.
The 32-year-old struck a hat-trick on his return from a hernia operation as Chelsea thrashed Premier League newcomers West Bromwich Albion 6-0.
Ghana midfielder Michael Essien was also in action for the defending Champions.
It was his first appearance since he suffered a knee injury in December.
Senegal defender Abdoulaye Faye scored a consolation goal in Stoke City's 2-1 defeat to Wolves.
FRANCE
Ayew scored in the Marseille fightback
Guinea striker Ismael Bangoura was on target again this weekend as he helped Rennes to a 3-0 win over 10-man Nancy.
Defending champions Marseille succumbed to a second straight defeat after losing 3-2 at Valenciennes.
Marseille staged a fightback in the final ten minutes of the game with Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo scoring from the penalty spot, and a strike from Ghana midfielder Dede Ayew.
It was the last game for the Senegal striker Mamadou Niang, who revealed after the match that he was moving to Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Marseille now lie joint bottom of the Ligue 1 table.
Algeria's Ryad Boudebouz was on target for Sochaux's 3-2 loss to St Etienne.
HOLLAND
Morocco's Nordi Amrabat played his part in the biggest win of the weekend as his side PSV Eindhoven trounced De Graafschap 6-0.
Ghana striker Matthew Amoah was back on target for a second successive weekend but his side, nine-man NAC Breda lost 3-1 at Utrecht.
BELGIUM
Morocco striker Mbark Boussoufa scored the opener for Anderlecht, as they walloped Beerschot 4-0.
DR Congo's Tsholola Tshimanya equalised for Lokeren with two minutes remaining as they drew 3-3 at Standard Liege.
And Cameroon striker Dorge Kouemaha was sent off in the last minute as his side Club Bruges lost the derby to city rivals Cercle Bruges 3-1.
