African champions TP Mazembe have been thrown out of the Cecafa Club Cup after a fracas broke out during a game.

Mazembe, who were invited to take part in the tournament as guests, have already returned to DR Congo.

Cecafa, the East and Central African regional grouping, acted after Mazembe's match with Rwandan giants APR had to be abandoned.

Scuffles broke out after a goal by Tresor Mputu Mabi, Mazembe's best known player, was disallowed.

Mabi was sent off after appearing to aim a kick at the referee.

The dispute escalated and the match was abandoned.

TP Mazembe's official website reported that their party was kept in the stadium for several hours and that one of their number, midfielder Guy Lusadisu, was taken away by police.

He subsequently reappeared and the squad made their way to the airport.

They flew into Kinshasa on Sunday.

Both APR and TP Mazembe had already qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition, but Djibuoti Telecom have been drafted in to replace the African champions.
