Sunday Chidzambwa has quit as coach of Zimbabwe to take over at South African club Free State Stars.

"He has submitted his resignation and has left for South Africa," Zimbabwe's Football Association (Zifa) Chief Executive Henrietta Rushwaya confirmed.

She added a replacement is yet to be found and admitted that Chidzambwa is owed money but refused to say how much.

"I have coached in this country for 26 years and this is a new challenge for me," Chidzambwa said.

He has signed a two-year deal to replace Gordon Igesund, who has resigned, from coaching Free State Stars.

Zimbabwe's next international engagement is on the weekend of 21-23 May against Seychelles in the African Nations Championship for locally-based players.

Chidzambwa, a former national team captain, was the first coach to guide Zimbabwe to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2004 when he was known as Sunday Marimo.

He was also director of coaching for local football giants Dynamos.
