McCarthy has fallen down the pecking order at Blackburn
South Africa's Benni McCarthy has given his clearest indication yet he wants to quit Blackburn Rovers in January.
The 31-year-old has fallen out of favour with boss Sam Allardyce, who said last week he would not stand in the way should McCarthy try to leave.
He was speaking in Johannesburg upon his return to international duty.
"In my opinion I am better than what we have at Rovers, but unfortunately the manager prefers a different style of player," the forward explained.
"I am not the type of player he wants and that is why I am not playing."
McCarthy has not started a match for Blackburn since the opening day of the season.
He stressed that he had no hard feelings towards either Allardyce or Rovers, who he joined in 2006 after a successful period with 2004 European champions Porto.
McCarthy also declared his delight at being linked with a move to Premiership strugglers Portsmouth.
"Portsmouth are going through a bad patch but are still a top side," McCarthy said.
"I have discussed them with (South Africa captain) Aaron Mokoena and at this stage it is still a rumour.
"There are other clubs in England and Europe that have shown interest in me."
McCarthy has recently fallen behind the likes of Franco di Santo, El Hadji Diouf and Jason Roberts in Blackburn's starting line-up.
The striker, who is South Africa's all-time top-scorer with 31 goals from nearly 80 internationals, is preparing for upcoming friendlies against Japan and Jamaica.
