South Africa ended a record six-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Madagascar in a hastily arranged match.
Substitute Katlego Mphela scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute as Bafana Bafana's home-based players struggled to overcome the Madagascans.
The 2010 World Cup hosts were largely unimpressive against their island visitors, who stepped in after Angola pulled out of the tie.
Madagascar hit the post near the end of the friendly match in Kimberley.
The victory is the South Africans' first since they beat New Zealand in the Confederations Cup in June.
Their next games include away ties against Norway and Iceland in October, before returning home to meet Japan and Jamaica in November.
