Confederation Cup round-up

Zambia and Sundowns striker Collins Mbesuma
Mbesuma grabbed the late equaliser for Sundowns

Haras El Hadood of Egypt defeated Tunisia's El Gouafel Gafsa 3-0 in the third round, first-leg of the Confederation Cup in Alexandria. on Sunday.

Two goals from Ahmed Eid Abdul-Malek secured the win for the home side.

The striker steered the hosts into a 4th minute lead when he took advantage of poor defending by the Tunisians.

Abdul-Salam Nagah doubled the lead on 21 minutes before Abdul-Malek's strike on the hour mark sealed the victory.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa salvaged a 2-2 draw against Vita Club on Saturday.

The home side needed a stoppage-time goal from Zambian Collins Mbesuma in Pretoria to hold the DR Congo side.

The visitors were two goals ahead after 20 minutes with goals from captain Bongeli Lofo and Ilunga Diba.

Sundowns pulled one goal back midway through the second half through Kurt Lentjies before Mbesuma levelled with a close-range bicycle kick.

However, the Pretoria club that reached the 2001 Champions League final are unlikely to survive the return match before a possible 80,000 crowd at the Martyrs Stadium in the Congolese capital.

This result, coupled with the Champions League exits of SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town two weeks ago, means South Africa are unlikely to have a club in the group phase of either Confederation club competition.

In the weekend's other matches ENPPI of Egypt and E.S. Setif of Algeria all but secured their places in the next phase of the competition after emphatic third round, first leg wins.

ENPPI sealed a resounding 4-0 win over Red Arrows of Zambia while Setif thrashed Angolan club Recreativo de Libolo by a similar scoreline.

Elsewhere, a 75th minute strike by Belkeir Mohamed Amine helped JSM Bejaia of Algeria to beat Mali's Stade Malien 1-0.

Home side Aigle Royal of Cameroon defeated Nigeria's Bayelsa United 1-0.

The second leg matches will be played in two weeks' time.

The winners of the third round ties will play the losers of the third round of the Champions League for a place at the mini-league stage of the Confederation Cup.
