Rock Gnassingbe, the former president, has regained his position at the top of the Togo Football Federation.

He beat the former president Tata Avlessi in a special election held on Sunday.

The elections were held to try and resolve a period of crisis within the Federation.

Football's world governing body Fifa recommended the move after a long sequence of infighting.

Gnassingbe, who is the brother of the country's President Faure Gnassingbe, was ousted two years ago after Togo's shambolic campaign at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He promised to rebuild the game in the country, saying "the time has come to resurrect Togo football to recapture its former glory".

Gnassingbe polled 30 of the 51 votes available - his nearest rival, Avlessi, took 14.

"This is real democracy at work", Avlessi said.

He promised to work with the returning president.

Togo were recently forced to play several matches away from home after fans attacked Malian players following a World and Nations Cup qualifying game.

Their star player Emmanuel Adebayor has had a fiery relationship with the national set-up.

He briefly gave up his international career in protest at the way the players were treated.

The 2006 World Cup finalists are in Group A in the final round of qualifying for 2010, taking on Cameroon, Gabon and Morocco.
