All 20 places in the next round have been determined

Guinea took the last remaining place in the second group phase of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

The Gambia and Uganda were the unluckiest teams on the final day of the first group stage, as they missed out on best runners-up spots.

In groups 1 to 6, Cameroon, Guinea, Kenya, Benin, Nigeria, Ghana, Gabon, and Algeria all made it through.

Uganda's 2-1 win against Benin brought them into contention, as they were set to go through as one of the best runners-up if Angola failed to win.

But Angola came from behind to beat Niger 3-1 in Luanda, putting the Cranes into third position in the group, and letting Mozambique through as one of the best runners-up.

Guinea beat Kenya 3-2 in Conakry - a draw or a Kenya win would have put The Gambia through.

Group one

Cameroon had already qualified as group winners, but enjoyed a welcome goal feast against Mauritius in Yaounde. Samuel Eto'o scored twice as did Albert Meyong Ze in a 5-1 victory. Tanzania claimed a 3-1 win over Cape Verde, who finished second but with too few points for a best runners-up berth.

Group two

Guinea survived a comeback to beat Kenya 3-2 on Sunday. Ismael Bangoura, Mamadou Bah and Kamil Zayatte scored before Francis Ouma and Kevin Opondo pulled back late goals. Zimbabwe's slender chances of getting into second place were dashed by a 4-2 defeat by bottom side Namibia in Windhoek on Saturday.

Samuel Eto'o struck twice as Cameroon cruised to a win

Uganda fought back from a goal down to beat group winners Benin 2-1, but the Cranes finished third in the group after Angola came from behind to beat Niger 3-1 in a game that kicked-off two hours later than the match in Kampala. Manchester United striker Manucho played for Angola.

Group four

Nigeria confirmed their status as one of Africa's footballing powerhouses by becoming the only team with a 100 percent record in this round of matches. They thumped Sierra Leone 4-1 in Abuja. 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa have failed to qualify but they did at least get their second win of the campaign, beating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in Malabo. Coach Joel Santana was impressed by Bafana Bafana's commitment. "The heat was unbearable, the humidity was high and the pitch was unplayable but the players went in there and played from the heart against these challenges. That is something that really touched me," he said.

Algeria top the group by just one point after their 0-0 draw with Liberia in Monrovia. Senegal finish in third place and are eliminated on goal difference after their 1-1 draw with neighbours The Gambia in Dakar. The result prompted violence in and around the stadium. The Gambia finished second but were the ninth-best runners-up, in a competition where the eight best second-placed teams went through along with the twelve group winners.
