France was the first major European league to get underway.

Lyon, who are looking for their eight consecutive league title, got off to a good start with a 3-0 win over visitors Toulouse.

Their new Cameroonian striker Jean Makoun opened the scoring before two-goals from the Algeria-born French striker Karim Benzema.

Ivory Coast striker Bakary Kone and Senegal's Mamadou Niang both scored for Marseille as they drew 4-4 at Rennes.

Marseille had a 3-1 lead at half time, but Rennnes pulled a goal back soon after the break, then three goals were scored in stoppage time.

Newly-promoted Grenoble won their first game 2-1 away at Sochaux, thanks to a late comeback.

Algeria's Nassim Akrour drew Grenoble level in the 87th minute, before the winner came a minute later.
