Mbia helps Cameroon beat Honduras

Cameroon's Stephane Mbia
Stephane Mbia scored the winner for Cameroon against Honduras

Midfielder Stephane Mbia scored the only goal of the game as Cameroon beat Honduras at the Beijing Olympics.

Mbia collected the ball 25 metres out in the 74th minute and hit a low right-footed drive past the Honduras goalkeeper Kevin Hernandez.

The 1-0 win gives Cameroon four points and keeps the team's quarter-final hopes alive heading into their final Group D match against Italy.

Honduras have now lost both their games and cannot advance.

Cameroon dominated possession throughout the match, but created few quality scoring opportunities in the first half.

Defender Alexandre Song, who sat out Cameroon's opening 1-1 draw with South Korea, threatened in the 10th minute when he stole the ball in midfield and hit a right-footed drive that went just over the crossbar.

After Mbia's strike in the 74th minute the field opened up as Honduras sought an equaliser and Cameroon were unlucky not to score again.

Christian Bekamenga hit the post on a ricochet and substitute Alain Olle hit the post again in the 86th minute.

Cameroon now need just a draw in their final group game on 13 August against Italy to reach the quarter-finals.

In Sunday's other game in Group D Italy beat South Korea 3-0.

The results mean that Italy are through to the last eight and currently top the group with six points, Cameroon are second on four points.

South Korea are in third place with one point, while Honduras are yet to get a single point and are unable to reach the last eight.
