Keshi ready for Mali challenge

New Mali coach Stephen Keshi believes he has the credentials to revive the ailing Eagles.

Keshi, who masterminded Togo's maiden World Cup qualification in 2006, took charge of Mali last month.

And the Nigerian will be in the Mali dug-out for the first time when the West Africans take on Congo in a World Cup qualifier in Bamako next month.

Keshi told BBC Sport that he will have to prove himself all over again with Mali after their unimpressive displays at the African Nations Cup earlier this year.

"The Nations Cup is dead and buried, and we are now in a new chapter," Keshi said.

"The fans and media have shown so much warmth since I got here and I am confident they will do same when we face Congo and others.

"There's a lot to do as past records and achievements count for nothing at this stage.

"Everyone is ready to work together for the success of the country and that's a good start for me and the team.

Keshi is fast gaining himself a reputation as one of the continent's shrewdest coaches despite being overlooked by his homeland on several ocassions.

"People judge me on hearsay but managing footballers and playing the game are totally different.

"The foundation in Mali is exceptional as the team has its own camp site with accommodation and a perfect playing surface.

"These sorts of things are only found in Europe and when a country puts one in place in Africa, there's nothing more to ask for.

"It will be a great achievement if Mali makes it to the 2010 World Cup, but we have to take it one game at a time and see what happens."
