Etoile stunned by Dynamos

Etoile celebrate
It was Dynamos not Etoile celebrating in Sousse

African Champions Etoile du Sahel suffered a stunning home defeat to visiting Dynamos of Zimbabwe, knocking them out of this year's Champions League before the group phase.

Dynamos had a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg, and scored the only goal of the game in the second leg in Tunisia to claim a fantastic win, 2-0 on aggregate.

Benjamin Marere scored just before the half hour mark to give the visitors a surprise win.

Victory for Dynamos mean they make it through to the lucrative group phase of the tournament, and the title holders are out.

Their participation in the game had been in doubt in the run up to the match because of hugely escalating travel costs.

But they raised the cash at the last moment, and so only arrived in the coastal resort of Sousse in the early hours of the morning of the game.

The defeat for Etoile leaves them battling for a place in the latter stages of the Confederation Cup.

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation commentator Charles Mabika says the celebrations lasted all night into Sunday in Harare.

"People couldn't believe it. It slowly dawned on everybody that Dynamos have done the almost impossible - knocking out the defending champions," Mabika told BBC Sport.

Mabika also said that Dynamos would now be incredibly motivated to make an even bigger impact on the latter stages of the Champions League.

"I can see the Dynamos players just dying to go through to the final, repeating the feat they accomplished surprisingly way back in 1998.
