Amos Adamu has promised to revive the West African Football Union (Wafu) after becoming leader of the regional body, which last held a meaningful tournament in 2002.

The Nigerian took over from Ivorian Jacques Anouma at a ceremony in Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

"It takes a lot of effort to be able to bring them in but I can tell you we are going to have two competitions this year," Adamu told BBC Sport.

Most teams in the region already have a busy fixture list, with upcoming World Cup and African Nations Championship qualifiers.

At Wafu's general assembly in Abidjan, Adamu unveiled some of his other plans, including training administrators and journalists, setting up a website, and raising funds through sponsorship deals.

The handover of power should mark the end of a protracted battle between Adamu and Anouma, who both sit on the executive committees of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and the game's governing body, Fifa.

The conflict between them was mediated by Caf, and it was agreed that Adamu would take over at the end of Anouma's term as Wafu president, which has just ended.

Sitting alongside Anouma, Adamu said the two were now on friendly terms.

"Perfection is not a virtue of human beings, but what is more important is you are able to settle these differences and you are able to move ahead," he said.

"Both of us have learnt one lesson or other."

"In a matter of no time you will not even remember that we have lost any time."
