Cosafa sponsor search goes on

The Cosafa president says he is still looking for sponsors
The future of the southern African regional tournament, the Cosafa Cup, is still in doubt.

The event is without a sponsor, after South African brewers SAB ended their support last year, after 11 years.

Cosafa officials have been searching for a replacement backer.

"We are in the middle of delicate negotiations and are confident of a solution," Cosafa president Suketu Patel, told the BBC.

The Cosafa Cup features the national sides of Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

But since it was founded in 1997, only four teams have claimed the title: Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe three times each, and South Africa twice.

Cosafa is based in the Botswanan capital of Gabarone, and there had been rumours of a move to South Africa - where most potential sponsors are based.

"There has been no decision on moving away from Botswana," Mr Patel said.

"However, if it is deemed advantageous for Cosafa to be moved elsewhere, we will obviously have to make decisions in the best interests of the organisation."
