Berti Vogts failed to take advantage of 10-man Ghana

The future of Nigeria coach Berti Vogts looks under threat after officials at the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) failed to back the under-fire boss.

Nigeria's quarter-final defeat to 10-man Ghana marked their worst showing at the Cup of Nations since 1982.

And NFA chairman Sanni Lulu said Vogts's position will be discussed later this week.

"The players tried their best and we did all we could, so there must only be one thing wrong," he told BBC Sport.

"And that is what we will try to find out when we meet," he added.

"We are going re-strategize on our part as the NFA, collectively review what went wrong with the team and we'll make our revelations known to everyone.

"We all practically participated here and must say 'sorry to Nigerians' for not advancing into the next round.

"The team did well but wherever it all went wrong, someone has to take the responsibility."

Disappointed players, officials of the NFA, sports ministry and fans were livid after Nigeria failed to take advantage of their numerical strength against Ghana where they lost 2-1.

"I will say one sentence, we simply lost out tactically to the Ghanaians," midfielder Seyi Olofinjana told BBC Sport.

But even though he is wanted out, Vogts is confident of his future with the West African country.

"I am proud of my players and they will leave here with their heads held high," he told a press conference on Thursday.

"I have a young side and they came up against a team like Ghana who were at the last World Cup, I must say we will learn from here and show that in 2010."
