Wesley believes that Liberia will shine in continental competitions |
Hopes are high in Liberia that the country's representatives will make an impact in the continental competitions that get underway in February. There was a general feeling that the 2007 domestic season was the best for many years.
Liberia produced one of Africa's greatest footballing legends in George Weah, but the country is yet to make an impact on the continent at club and national team level.
The club that produced Weah, Invincible XI, will play in the Champions League, and Black Stars are in the Confederation Cup.
"It's our hope that this year we'll move one step further," Liberia Football Association president Sombo Izetta Wesley told BBC Sport.
"Everybody was competitive in the 2007 league, and it's our hope that our teams will ably represent us in Africa this year.
"Football is changing, it's not on past history, and we can make it to the group stages."
Talent needs managing

Liberia's representatives went out in the first round of both continental club competitions last year. Albert Jaja of the Liberian Sports Writers Association feels that progressing to the group stage will be beyond the Liberian clubs.
"When you get to playing teams from countries like Nigeria, Ghana or Ivory Coast, we can't compete at that level," he said.
"We need to look for money first to get our best players back in the league.
"Most of our best players have gone to Europe or Indonesia.
"The talent is here, but we need to rethink the managerial aspect of our teams first."
The Liberian sides will both meet teams from Guinea in the club competitions that get underway in mid-February.
Invincible XI play AS Kaloum in the Champions League, and Black Stars will take on Satellite FC.
